SUMMARY
Fiber development was studied in four cotton varieties during the years of 1961 to 1965 in the Centro Experimental de Campinas, São Paulo.
In full flowering of the plants, all flowers were labeled in a period of 96 hours. The characters of fiber length, uniformity of length, percentage of mature fibers and Pressley resistance were analysed in samples of labeled bolls collected weekly, starting seven days after labeled.
The data showed that the uniformity of length remained constant during the development of the bolls. Pressley index showed tendency to increase until the 33rd day to keep constant afterwards. Fiber length increased continuously until the opening of the bolls, being the growth rate higher in the beginning. The increase in the percentage of mature fiber was very slow until the 30th day becaming faster after this day and stabilized some days before the opening of the bolls.
