SUMMARY

Correlation coefficients were calculated between the concentration of nutrients in the dry matter and the percentage of dry matter in the fresh material of the plant. This was done with reference to rice, potato, dry beans, wheat, tomato and soybean plants. Generally, the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium of dry matter decreased with age and were negatively correlated with the percentage of dry matter of the fresh plant material, whereas calcium and magnesium were positively correlated. The decrease in the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium could be due to dilution effect because of the increase of the dry matter. It could also be due to translocation of the elements to the reproductive parts and a decrease in the absorption of nutrients by leaves and stems as a function of age.
