Description of some important agronomic characteristics of 'IAC-38' and 'Campinas' castor beans cultivars
Nicolau Victório Banzatto; José Luiz Vasconcellos Rocha
SUMMARY
The new cultivar 'Campinas' of castor bean recently delivered to the farmers presents the advantage of having indehiscent fruits. This selection differs from 'IAC-38', the most important dwarf cultivar grown in Brazil, in a few other characteristics which may be of value for the acceptance of the 'Campinas' cultivar. The present paper refers to a series of observations made in both cultivars in order to have comparable information about the vegetative cycle, height of the primary, secondary and tertiary racemes and also the period from planting to flowering of these three racemes.
It was found that the 'Campinas' cultivar is about a month earlier than 'IAC-38' and the primary and secondary racemes are also shorter in the 'Campinas'. The two first racemes represent only 66 per cent of the total yield of 'Campinas' but 87 per cent of the fruits produced by 'IAC-38'. The amount of empty seeds was noticed to increase from the primary to tertiary raceme in both cultivars.
Due to its good agronomical characteristics, mainly for the indehiscence of the fruits, the cultivar 'Campinas' is now being used to replace the 'IAC-38' cultivar.
