SUMMARY
A survey was made on the occurrence of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) diseases in variety trials carried out during the raing season planting at eleven localities in the State of São Paulo.
The diseases identified were, as follows; common blight (Xanthomonas phaseoli (EFS) Dows.), anthracnosis (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (Sacc. et Magn.) Scrib.), rust (Uromyces phaseoli (Reben) Wint., var. phaseoli), mosaic (virus), and root rot (Fusarium sp., Rhizoctonia solaniKühn, and Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc). Data on common blight, anthracnosis, rust, and virus diseases were tabulated (tables I-IV). They indicate that there was a great variation in the incidence of diseases and severity of symptoms between localities and varieties. These variations are attributed to differences in environmental conditions, varietal resistance or tolerance to the diseases, and the use of disease-free or infected seed.
The varieties Pintado, Creme, Feijão 60 Dias, and Preto G-1 showed tolerance to bacterial blight; Preto G-1, Feijão 60 Dias, Manteiga, and Pintado were tolerant to rust. The Rosinha group and Preto showed great susceptibility to anthracnosis. Preto G-1 was highly susceptible to virus diseases.
Since bacterial blight, anthracnosis, and common bean mosaic are seed borne, the use of disease-free seed is recommended. Production of these can be achieved in localities where occurrence of these diseases is minimal and by using adequate techniques.
