Effects of moisture and treatments with insecticides upon the maintenance of the germinative power of squash seeds

SUMMARY
The influence of moisture content (4.8, 8.9, and 12.8%) of seed squash {Cucurbita pepo,var. melo pepo Alef), and treatment with insecticides (methyl bromide, DDT, and Malagran) were evaluated by means of germination tests, during a period of 18 months in open storage condition, in the presence of insects Lasioderma serricorne.
Independently of the treatment, squash seeds kept their capacity of germination well (about 80%) for 6 months. After this period methyl bromide fumigated seeds and the control decreased in their viability, which after 12 months was nihil. Malagran treated seeds behaved a little better, maintaining good germinative power for 8 months. However, from this test on, their germinability decreased rapidly and was nihil at the final test. Seeds treated with DDT germinated well during the whole period of the experiment, and at the 18-months' test their viability was still higher than 70%.
