Entomologia do Museu Goeldi

SUMMARY

Entomology as a research area at the Musen Goeldi was initiated in 1899, with the arrival of Adolpho Ducke, who specialized in the study of wasps and bees. By 1954, when the Museu became associated with the present-day Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), entomology had become, however, a neglected discipline. Reactivation of entomology came in 1960 with Jan Karel Bechyné and Bohumila Springlova Bechyné, specialists on chrysomelid beetles. They were followed in 1962 by Dalcy de Oliveira Albuquerque, Isolda Rocha e Silva Albuquerque, and Roger Hipolyte Pierre Arlé. Presently, the Museu Goeldi has five research entomologists who study the systematics, ecology, and behavior of wasps, ants, termites, horse flies, and other insects of the diverse fauna of the Brazilian Amazon region.
