Produtividade sazonal da floresta e atividade de forrageamento animal em habitat de terra firme da Amazônia

Four transects, aproximately 2.5 kilometer long each and crossing varios types of terra-firme habitat, were followed dily during 13 months (January, 1986 - January, 1987) by at least two observers. We collected data on the foraging activity of animas on the grond and in the different strata of the forest. The study area was a protected part of the Amazonian forest in Tucuruí (Pará, Brazil). Seasonal trends in the utilization of food items consumed by terretrial turtles (Geochelone carbonaria, G. denticulata and Platemys platicephala), by rodents (Sciurus gilvigularis and Dasyprocta aguti), by deer (Mazama americana and M. guazoubira), and by primates (Cebus apella, Alouatta belzebul, Chiropotes satanas, Saimiri sciureus, and Saguinus midas) were studied by continuous observation. The transects were followed from 6:00 to 10:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00. The study showed that the diets of these species on terra-firme habitat depend upon the avalilability of food in the forest, and on the season. The species of animals observed exhibited seasonal changes in foraging strategy. Geochelone carbonaria and G. denticulata forage largely on fruits available between September and January. The same fruits are also consumed by Dasyprocta aguti. Cebus apella has two peaks of consuption of fruits: one peak between January an March and a second peak between July and December. These same fruits are consumed by Chiropotes satanas and Alouatta belzebul. Although Alouatta consumes mostly leaves, during the two annual peaks of fruit producton howler monkeys were opportunistically frugivorous.
