The first year of my term comes to an end with great prospects for the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia. Over more than sixty years recognized as the primary tool for dissemination of Brazilian research concerned with physiology and cardiovascular system diseases, our journal is now among the top cardiology journals in the world after achieving the Impact Factor of 1.316, according to Thompson Reuters' Journal of Citation Report 2010. This represents the well-deserved establishment of cardiology and in Brazil and its journal, which is now indexed in all major international databases.

The maintenance of this important achievement, which resulted from the hard work done by the preceding Editors, is undoubtedly a considerable challenge for the journal and for the Brazilian researchers. Thus, in addition to publishing quality papers, we have to encourage the scientific debate in the field of cardiovascular disease by encouraging the publication of editorials, review articles and viewpoints prepared by renowned Brazilian and foreign experts.

Moreover, we should keep on improving the editorial process of our journal, which this year has fully incorporated IT systems to submit and monitor works in general. The improvement of editorial review procedures, which relied on the close collaboration of the editorial board and reviewers, also included the redesign and standardization of the recommendations made during the review process, with emphasis on the originality and relevance of the topics discussed, as well as on the validity and reliability of the findings presented. With the continuation of expanded editions in 2010, we also managed to reduce the lead time for the publication of manuscripts, currently maintaining an average interval of ten months from the submission and final publication of original manuscripts.

From the substantial increase of Brazilian scientific production in cardiology in recent years, especially resulting from the intense activity of post-graduate programs in Brazil, each month we have an increasing number of submissions. Adding to these, there is an increasing number of manuscripts from foreign research centers, which unfortunately requires us to decline publication of many studies with an undisputable merit. These facts, in turn, should lead us to publish scientific research findings of an increasingly better quality, contributing to the stability and establishment of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia worldwide.

For a specialty journal such as ours, the results delivered actually represent the efforts of all society members sponsoring it. Accordingly, we expect a continuous and close collaboration from all members of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology seeking to boost our journal. Conceived as a way to repay the participation of all our collaborators, the Scientific Publication Award (Prêmio ABC de Publicação Científica), which awarded five original manuscripts published in 2010, paid tribute to the most active reviewer in 2010, and to the most quoted papers in our history and in the past two years.
