The Brazilian Archives of Cardiology (Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia) have been the main vehicle of scientific knowledge dissemination in the area of cardiovascular diseases for more than 60 years and represent the most important asset of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology. During this period, the journal reached its maturity and started to integrate the most relevant international indexers, including the Institute of Scientific Information/Thomson Scientific database. The English and Spanish versions of the journal, in their electronic format, have increased its exposure, mainly for the Latin American countries. Moreover, we have witnessed in the last years, the consolidation of the ABC Scientific Publication Award as an important event of incentive and recognition of the national scientific production in cardiology.

Having published several original articles of great scientific relevance, The Brazilian Archives of Cardiology will have its impact factor disclosed, for the first time, by the Journal of Citation Report during the first semester of 2010. This will raise the journal to the same level as several international publications and the journal will also be classified by Capes (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior) as a Qualis B2 journal.

In this context, we have taken up the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology for the next four years, with the challenging mission of carrying on the colossal work developed by the great masters of national cardiology who preceded us as editors and bringing the journal to its final consolidation in the international scenario.

Having been chosen as the first professional editor from an array of names that included several well-known professionals in the field, I am aware of the enormous responsibility represented by the new reality of the prestigious leadership position in our journal.

With the objective of attaining the position of the main scientific forum in cardiology of Latin America and consolidating our international status, we have several proposals to be implemented and a great deal of work to be developed with the close collaboration of our associated editors from the Editorial Board and all the reviewers that bequeath us with their dedication and scientific knowledge.

The main objectives of this management include the improvement of the editorial reviewing process and publication quality, as well as decreasing the time between the article submission and publication, making the journal increasingly attractive to researchers from post-graduation programs in the area of Cardiology in our country, as well as increasing the number of studies from international research centers.

In addition to publishing the results of high-quality scientific research, we also aim at expanding scientific debate in the area of cardiovascular diseases, encouraging the publication of editorials, review articles and points of view prepared by renowned national and international specialists.

The increased international exposure of the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology through its presence at the websites of the main international societies of Cardiology and the progressive increase of its impact factor as a result of the rising quality of its content are also important goals of our management.

In order to reach such objectives we hope to count with the collaboration of all members of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, who will be able to send their original contributions and scientific comments, as well as criticism and suggestions.

Finally, I would like to thank all for the trust placed in me and say that, as I start this job, I am very proud to be the first cardiovascular surgeon to take up the coordination of the main Brazilian cardiologic science portal.

Cordially,

Luiz Felipe P. Moreira

Editor-in-Chief
