Autologus conjunctival transplantation in superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis

SUMMARY

There are many suggested treatments for Superior Limbic Keratoconjuntivitis (SLK), such as topical application of silver nitrate, conjunctival cryotherapy or thermocoagulation, and even conjunctival recession or resection.

In a certain group of patients, none of these treatments give a permanent cure of the disease, and surgical procedures that leave a bared sclera might lead to complications specially in sicca patients. We report herein another surgical approach, i.e., autologus conjunctival transplantation to the superior bulbar conjunctiva, that we have performed in four eyes of two patients. After a period of 12 months of follow-up, the patients are still assymptomatic, the slit lamp aspect of the conjunctival transplantation is normal, and there is no rose bengal or fluorescein staining. We think that this approach is a safe, successful and more permanent surgical technique, specially for SLK patients with associated dry eyes refractory to clinical treatment.
