Conjunctival fungal microbiota in patients with acquired imunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)

SUMMARY

The increased number of fungus infections in patients with AIDS has estimulated new studies about the pathogenic involvement of these agents in ocular and systemic pathologies. A few number of data about the ocular mycotic flora in patients with AIDS, motivated the present study.

85 patients with AIDS, who presented some kind of opportunistic infections or neoplasias and 60 healthy patients, HIV negative, as control group, were examinated. All patients examinated here lived in the metropolitan area of São Paulo and they didn' t present any kind of ocular symptons or signs at moment of examination. Material from inferior fornix was obtained and inoculated at agar-Sabouraud-dextrose with gentamycin medium.

The fungus isolated from patients with AIDS were: C. albicans, C. pseudotropicalis, C. glabrata, Cladosporium spp and Penicillium spp. Whereas, normal persons were: Cladosporium spp, M. sterilia, Fusarium sp, Candida sp.
