SUMMARY
The adaptation of contact tenses was studied prospectivelly in 86 eyes of 50 patients with keratoconus between April 1991 and January 1993.
The patients' age varied from 11 thru 54 years with an average of 23,54 years. From this universe 60% was male and 70% was composed of white colar individuais.
A proper adaptation was not observed in 6 eyes. During the period of time this study was dane, from the remaining 80 eyes it was noticed an intolerance to the use of contact tenses in 2 other cases. It was recommended that a corneal transplantation was made in these 8 cases.
Among the 86 eyes studied most of the cases was of advanced keratoconus: 30 of these eyes showed that there was not least 1 cylindrical axis with more than 61 dioptries.
A visual acuity equal or better than 20/50 was obtained in 79,06% of all cases.
It clearly resulted from this study that a contact tenses adaptation must always be tried even in the most advanced cases of keratoconus, once the possibilities of getting good optical results are really bigs.
