SUMMARY
Purpose:
This study was carried out to determine the efficacy of the intraoperative application of subconjunctival O. 02% mitomycin C and topical O. 02% mitomycin C instilled postoperatively, on pterygium recurrence after surgical excision.
Methods and results:
45 eyes of 45 patients were treated with the intraoperative application of mitomycin C and three cases showed pterygium recurrence (6.67%). A cell sponge was soaked with a 0.02% solution of mitomycin C and placed in contact with the exposed scleral bed for 3 minutes. 47 eyes of 47 patients after pterygium excision received 0.02% mitomycin C eyedrops 3 times a day for 5 days and two cases showed recurrence (4.26%). Follow up time for ali cases exceeded eighteen months.
Conclusion:
The comparison between the efficacy of the intraoperative application versus topical use of the drug didn't show significant difference.
