Study of the incidence of stellar cataract in patients using chlorpromazine

SUMMARY

The author presents a retrospective study of the incidence of a characteristic type of adverse effect due to the use of chlorpromazine, the stellar cataract, in a group of 20 inpatients of the Hospital Psiquíatrico Prof. Adauto Botelho (Goiânia GO - Brazil).

The incidence observed (80%) is analysed in its distribution in sex, age groups, time of use of the drug and dosages used.

The author concludes that it is the time of use of the drug, prolonged in the majority of the cases, the main reason for the high incidence found, playing the dosage, small in the majority of the cases, an important but secondary role.
