Ocular penetrating wounds in the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo. The changes in the last 27 years

SUMMARY

A retrospective study was performed on 95 eyes of 92 patients with ocular penetrating wound at the "Clínica Oftalmológica do Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP" between May, 1996 and March, 1997. 77.2% of the patients were male, the age group more frequently affected was between O and 40 years (85.9%). The main cause was car accidents (29.5%), followed by domestic accidents, violence and occupational injuries (22.1 %, 22.1 % and 20% respectively). Although the total incidence of these wounds decreased in the last 5 years, preventive measures seem not to have changed significantly their causes.
