Ocular perforations in traffic accidents: an epidemiological study

SUMMARY

We conducted a prospective study of 159 cases of ocular perforations due to road traffic accidents admitted of the São Paulo Hospital, Paulista Medical School, between June 1988 and September 1992. Of the total number of patients studied, 121 were male, 38 were female and 83 patients were under 27 years of age. Ninety one patients were front seat passengers and 68 were driving the vehicle by the time of the accident.

Nane were located at the black seat. Only 9 patients refered the use of seat belt. The most important related risk factors were night driving and alcohol ingestion.
