Preliminary experience with Molteno implant in refractory glaucoma

SUMMARY

Nineteen eyes of 17 patients with different forms of glaucoma (congenital glaucoma (5), neovascular glaucoma (5), aphakic glaucoma (4), glaucoma post penetrating keratoplasty (3) and traumatic glaucoma (2), underwent antiglaucomatous surgery, with MOLTENO implant.

The mean pre operative intraocular pressure was 36,3 mmHg ± 6,7 and the mean post operative intraocular pressure was 15,1 mmHg ± 5,2. The average follow-up was 8,0 months ± 4,9 ranging from 3 to 20 months.

Among the 19 eyes, three eyes eventually ran to phtisis bulbi. Among the remaining 16 eyes, only one had intraocular pressure higher or equal to 21 mmHg. Nine eyes kept intraocular pressure lower or equal to 21 mmHg, without any medication. Six eyes needed antiglaucomatous drugs, in order to control intraocular pressure at levels lower or equal to 21 mmHg.
