Pseudonasolacrimal obstruction in infancy

SUMMARY

We examined 22 children, age 6 month to 8 years with pseudonasolacrimal obstruction (PNLO). PNLO occurred frequently in females (68.2%). Epiphora was related few times associated to obstruction of superior air ways. Dacryocystography (DCG) showed the patency of lacrimal ducts in all children and nasal alterations like hypertrophy of turbinates (77.3%), clouding of air sinuses (18.2%), septal deviations (18.2%), mucous membrane thickness of face air sinuses (13.6%) and dilation of lacrimal sac (13.6%).

The authors suggest that PNLO should be considered when evaluating a child with sporadic epiphora, DCG patent and nasal obstructive signals.
