Sustainable cities: a new urban condition from studies applied to the city of Cuiabá, capital city of Mato Grosso State, Brazil

This research study proposes sustainable cities as a new urban contemporary condition, with the main objective of undertaking studies on urban sustainability and its application in the city of Cuiabá. It analyzes dispersion and density in an urban scale in 2000 and 2010, and, in a neighborhood-scale, the use and occupancy of plots of 25 ha in selected areas of 12 districts in 2002 and 2010. The systemic approach as a methodological procedure was adopted. Thus, initially, an observation and description of the urban phenomenon from the scales of analysis systems (macro, meso and micro) was sought, and secondary and primary data were collected. This resulted in mappings of dispersion in the scale of the city, and an analysis on a neighborhood-scale, from the 12 plots, both through satellite images. The qualitative analysis resulted in the proposition of a future scenario framework and an urban dispersion effect framework in Cuiabá. The investigation pointed out a low-density urban sprawl at the city scale. In the neighborhood scale, it identified a fall in environmental quality, resulting from a process of occupation without technical monitoring, peri-urban areas occupied with deficient infrastructure, leading to various impacts, while some consolidated urban areas that have their infrastructure underutilized are maintained.
