Histopathologic study on the effect of Tenoxicam and its diluent in the venous endothelium, in rabbits

Aiming to evaluate by the histopathology the effect of tenoxicam and its diluent in the venous endothelium, 48 white male New Zealand rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) with age over 10 weeks and weight varying between 2350 and 3500 grams were used. They were divided into two groups called Experiment and Control which were observed in intervals of 6, 12 and 24 hours. It was administered diluent or tenoxicam/diluent into the right and left auriculares veins in the Experiment Group and 0,9% sodium chloride in the Control Group. No statistically significant difference was observed between the animals weight in both groups before the performance of the procedure. In regarding to the presence or absence of thrombosis, it was possible to observe that: after the administration of diluent in the Experiment Group, 19,4% of the veins presented thrombi; after the administration of tenoxicam with the diluent in the Experiment Group, the incidence of thrombosis was also 19,4%, in the Control Group, which received 0,9% sodium chloride, none of the veins presented thrombi. The results observed allow to conclude that tenoxicam with its commercial diluent or its isolated diluent may cause thrombosis in the venous where they were injected.
