VARIETAL RESISTANCE OF GRAPEPEVINE TO XANTHOMONAS CAMPESTRIS PV. VITICOLA

ABSTRACT

Varieties of Vitis vinifera and hybrids of V. labrusca L. x V. vinifera were tested for susceptibility to Xanthomonas campestris pv. viticola by artificial inoculations. The experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions in the county of Campinas, SP, Brazil. Bacterial suspension (ca. 108 ufc/mL) was inoculated on the surface of fully expanded leaves using a high pressure sprayer. The tested varieties were Red Globe, Benitaka, Rubi, Itália, Niagara Branca and Niagara Rosada. A rating scale varying from 0 to 4 was used for evaluating symptoms development, 30 days after inoculations. Different degrees of susceptibility were observed among the varieties tested. Of the varieties belonging to the species V. vinifera, all were considered highly susceptible while the hybrids of V. labrusca L. x V. vinifera showed low degrees of disease severity. Red Globe cultivar was the most susceptible of them. The results showed that, although the hybrids have been resistant to the bacteria, the exchanges of plant materials must be done with restrictions in order to prevent the spread of the pathogen.
