CYTOTOXICITY OF BIFLAVONOIDS ISOLATED FROM OURATEA SPECTABILIS (OCHNACEAE) IN SIRC CELL LINE

ABSTRACT

The cytotoxicity of 6,6"- bigenkwanin (OSP-1), 7,7" dimethoxy-agathisflavone (OSP-2) and tetradimethoxyflavone (OSP-1 Met) isolated from leaves of Ouratea spectabilis, was evaluated in SIRC cell line by spectrophotometric measurement, the concentrations of substances that inhibited the absorbance to 50% of the control level (IC50%). The OSP-1, OSP-2 and OSP-1 Met presented IC50% of 381.9 ±22.29; 426.74 ± 22.05 and 359.7 ± 24.25 µg/ mL respectively. These compounds present inhibitory activity for aldose reductase, the enzyme that initiates cataract formation in diabetes.
