SEROLOGICAL RESPONSES OF BOVINE TO EXPERIMENTAL VACCINES AGAINST BOVINE COLIBACILOSE AND SALMONELOSE

ABSTRACT

The immunity response of experimental vaccines was evaluated in 46 pregnant cows, in late gestation, about 6 weeks before calving. This was done through the titers of antibodies from the serum and the colostrum of cows and from the serum of calves, natural and/or stimulated by one or two doses of a mixed vaccine anti-Escherichia coli and Salmonella Dublin (ESV), with and/or without adjuvant, in aqueous or oily vehicle. The titer of antibodies anti-K99+ of Escherichia coli, anti-H (A.H.S.) and anti-O (A.H.O.) of Salmonella Dublin was determined through the method of agglutination in tube, in serum samples collected before vaccination, at the 21st. and the 42nd days, and at the post-parturition, right after the vaccinations had started. In the case of the calves this happened at the 1st, 2nd and 4th weeks, or until the title absence was noticed; and colostrum after calving. For the anti-K 99 agglutinins of the Escherichia coli, after the vaccination with ESV the geometric mean titre (GTM) was on average increased by 283% in the 1st dose, 320% in the 2nd dose. For the aglutininas anti-H of the Salmonella Dublin, after the vaccination with ESV the GMT was on average increased by 260% in the 1st dose, 348% in the 2nd dose. For the aglutinins anti-O of the Salmonella Dublin, after the vaccination with ESV, the GTM was on average increased by 59.2% in the 1st dose, 259% in the 2nd dose. The vaccine mixed ESV, independently of the presence or of the adjuvante type, induced the aglutinin production in the vaccinated cows, which were transferred to the calves through the colostrum. The vaccine in aqueous or oily vehicle, applied with boosters doses, showed to be more efficient in the control of the bovine colibacilose and salmonelose.
