HELMINTHS OF CONVENTIONALLY MAINTAINED WISTAR RATS WITH DIFFERENT AGES

ABSTRACT

The present work aimed to determine the species and infection levels of helminthes, which were collected from the digestive system of conventionally maintained Wistar rats with different ages. The methods used to research the helminth eggs in 168 rats were those of Willis and Graham. The use of three repetitions of the Graham method enhanced the detection efficacy of positive animals for Syphacia sp. There was detected a 100% prevalence of S. muris in necropsis, in the young and adults; only the youngest animals (30 and 60 days) showed higher infection levels (p < 0.01) than lactents (21 days). Hydatigera taeniaeformis was also identified in the liver of one adult rat and the hepatic alterations shown are described in the histopathological exam.
