COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE SENSITIVITY OF BOVINE AND MURINE OVIDUCT EPITHELIAL CELL PRIMARY CULTURE TO BOVINE INFECTIOUS RINOTRACHEITIS VIRUS (BHV-1)

ABSTRACT

Bovine oviduct epithelia cell co-culture provides the development needs of bovine embryos in the in-vitro fecundation (IVF) process. This study evaluated bovine and murine oviduct epithelial cell sensitivity to bovine infectious rinotracheitis virus (BHV-1). Their cultures were infected with the bovine infectious rinotracheitis virus (105.6 TCID 50/mL). The cytopathic effect was observed 48 hours after the infection, and the virus was titred in MDBK cells. The evaluation showed that both cell types, bovine and murine, presented BHV-1 characteristic cytopathic effect. The titres found were 106.5 TCID 50/mL for the bovine oviduct and 104.8 TCID 50/mL for the murine oviduct. This study showed that murine oviduct cells are less susceptible to BHV-1 than the bovine ones. This could be advantageous in terms of the embryos co-culture system in IVF.
