INFESTATION BY MEGNINIA SPP. ON CHICKEN EGG LAYING FARMS

ABSTRACT

The present study reports for the first time in Brazil a massive infestation by Megninia causing damages on commercial poultry farms. This occurrence is of great concern, posing a new problem for the industrial poultry keeping. The identification of the samples demonstrated the occurrence of 2 species of mites: Megninia cubitalis and M. ginglymura. Both species of mites were found concomitantly on hens. The birds were weak and irritated, with damaged feathers and dermatitis with secretion. The damages caused on the property resulted in a 20% drop in egg production.
