SEVERITY OF POWDERY MILDEW (ERYSIPHE POLYGONI DC) ON COMMON BEAN CULTIVARS IN SÃO PAULO

ABSTRACT

Severity of powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) on twelve common bean cultivars was evaluated during spring season of 1993/94, summer season of 1993 and 1994, and autumn-winter season of 1993 and 1994 at different localities at São Paulo State, Brazil. Two experiments were carried out, one without and another with chemical control. The experimental design was a randomized block with twelve treatments (cultivars) with four replications. The twelve studied cultivars were: Carioca, IAC-Carioca, Aeté, Aysó, Pintado, Jalo, EMGOPA 201-Ouro, IPA6, IAPAR-14, IAPAR-31, IAPAR-44, FT-120 and LM-30380 line. The disease severity was evaluated using a scale varying from 1 to 5. The data were analyzed using Tukey at the 5% level. The lessaffected cultivars were IAC-Carioca, IAPAR-44 and the most susceptible ones were Jalo and Pintado, both belonging to the 'Manteiga' Group, no matter the season or locality studied.
