IMPORTANCE OF DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS IN AN OUTBREAK OF BOVINE ENZOOTIC PNEUMONIA

ABSTRACT

Enzootic pneumonia is an emergent infectious disease that occurs in young bovine, generally confined in groups. This illness is associated to the modern systems of intensive handling in milk and beef herds. Mycoplasma dispar, M. bovis, Ureaplasma diversum, Pasteurella haemolytica (Mannheimia haemolytica), P. multocida, Haemophilus somnus, bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), parainfluenza virus 3 and bovine herpesvírus 1 are the main microorganisms found, often in synergism. An outbreak of the illness was observed in four farms in São Paulo State in 2001 and the detailed led to the solution of these cases, clearly demonstrating the value of such diagnosis.
