INCIDENCE OF SALMONELLA SPP. IN NEWBORN CHICKENS

ABSTRACT

Salmonelosis is among the biggest problems in the poultry industry, however, this problem needs a careful prevention and control program to implant steps to avoid vertical and horizontal transmission. With the objective to research the incidence of salmonella in one-day broiler chicks from July to December 2002, 130 lots of newborn chicks, containing 10 chicks pear lot were examined yolks were collected from every chicks of each lot and a pool of samples for research of Salmonella spp. was constituted. From the130 lots examined, 32 (24.62%) showed positive results for Salmonella, being 24 (18.42%) Salmonella Enteritidis and 8 (6.15%) Salmonella enteric subspecies enteric (O: 9.12). According to the results obtained, we concluded that the incidence of Salmonella in the poultry industry is significant and the frequence of an isolation of Salmonella Enteritidis is a fact that must be priorized since it is an important serotype for public health.
