VESICULAR STOMATITIS: MONITORING IN SEMEN DONOR BULLS OF AN ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION CENTER

ABSTRACT

Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) is a sanitary barrier imposed by countries that buy industrialized and bottled semen in order to assure biosafety, besides the disease is considered a zoonosis. In the present study an Artificial Insemination (AI) Center located in northeast São Paulo, Brazil, was monitored in order to detect the presence of antibodies to VS (Indiana serotype) in donor bulls. A total of 72 bulls were analyzed from 2000 April to 2001 April, in relation to three periods and the following occurrence was found: 1.4% (1/72) in 2000, April; all the bulls were negative in 2000, September and 2.5% (1/40) in 2001, April. Although positive animals did not present clinical symptoms, they were culled. Although the animal positive in the first evaluation was eliminated, there was a new case in April, 2001. Results indicate the need for surveillance at AI Centers in Brazil and suggest that prophylatic and unspecific measures for the control of VS should be improved.
