MICROBIOLOGICAL WATER QUALITY OF THE SÃO LORENÇO RIVER, SÃO LOURENÇO DO SUL, RS, BRAZIL

ABSTRACT

The São Lourenço River is born in the countryside of São Lourenço do Sul city, Central Southern Rio Grande do Sul, and discharges into Laguna dos Patos, receiving throughout its passage agricultural residuals, nontreated wastewater from residential and commercial areas. With the objective to analyze the microbiological quality water of the river, samples were collected from three established points, between May 2004 and April 2005. For the microbiological analyzes, the following culture media were employed : Lactose Broth for the presuntive test, Brilliant green lactose bile Broth for the confirmative test of total colliforms and EC Broth for confirmative test of thermotolerant coliforms. From the results we can conclude that the water collected from all points was inappropriate for drinking or recreation due to contamination of 93% of samples with thermotolerant colliforms.
