ABSTRACT
ESTABLISHMENTS. This survey was carried out to evaluate 204 diagnostics' protocols for equine piroplasmosis using the Complement Fixation Test (CFT) for thoroughbread horses, between 4 and 6 years old, pertaining to 12 small equestrian establishments of different municipal districts of the south and southeast region of Brazil. The reduction of performance was the first indication in 70.0% of the seropositive horses through CFT for equine piroplasmosis, during the studied period. In CFT the percentage of positive reactions in this equine sample was 18.1% for Babesia equi (Laveran, 1901), 6.0% for mixed infection and 1.5% for Babesia caballi (Nuttall & Strickland, 1912) antigens. The average proportion of infection carriers for B. equi ranged between 0 and 4.0%, for mixed infection 0 and 1.5%, and for B. caballi 0 and 1.0% in all the establishments studied.
