MORPHOLOGIC ASPECTS OF THE OVARY OF RATS (RATTUS NORVEGICUS ALBINUS) TREATED WITH IVERMECTIN

ABSTRACT

Ivermectin belongs to the group of avermectins that arecatalogued as antihelmintic substances, resulted from fermentation of one actinomicet. The mechanism of action consists in the potentialization of GABA it (γ-aminobutiric acid). GABA is a stimulator of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion. This paperaims to evaluate the weight and themorphological aspects of ovary of rats treated with ivermectin. We used 70albino rats divided into groups of seven, with 10 animals each, that received different dosages of ivermectin (0.5 mg/kg up to 10.0 mg/kg) orally administrated. The animals kept as control received distilled water (vehicle of ivermectin) only. These animals were treated during 45 days, with administration of the medicament atthreeday intervals for each animal. After this periodovaries were withdrawn, weighted and subsequently processed for light microscopy. Our results demonstrated that the ivermectin does not provoke significant alterations in the ovary morphology or weight of treated rats.
