SEROPREVALENCE OF ANTIBODIES TO PORCINE PARVOVIRUS IN PIGS FROM URUARÁ MUNICIPALITY, PARÁ STATE, NORTHERN BRAZIL

ABSTRACT

Porcine parvovirus has been identified worldwide as an important agent of reproductive disease in pigs, being responsible for large economic losses. This survey aimed to study the herd prevalence of serical antibodies against Porcine Parvovirus in small farms of Uruará county in Pará state, Northern Brazil by using Hemaglutination Inhibition assay. Sera from all pigs (103 specimens) from 36 farms were sampled from a total of 2,200 farms. Considering positive sera specimens with titer equal to or greater than 8, the herd prevalence of serical antibodies against porcine parvovirus was estimated to be greater than 79.9%, with 99% confidence level. Considering positive sera specimens with titer greater than 80, the herd prevalence ranges from 60.9 to 89.1% with 95% confidence level. The prevalence in the sampled region, whatever the cut-off adopted, denotes a widespread presence of porcine parvovirus infection among the farms, focusing the possibility of the participation of this agent in reproductive disorders in pigs.
