EFFECT OF PLANTING DATE ON THE PRODUCTION AND THE OCURRENCE OF PESTS ON COTTON (GOSSYPIUM HIRSUTUM)

ABSTRACT

This study verified the influence of the planting time on the output of cotton CNPA 7H and Deltapine Acala 90, at Formosa do Rio Preto, São Desidério and Luiz Eduardo Magalhães, in the experimental fields of EMBRAPA, located at the farms Independência, Mizote and Poletto respectively, in the state of Bahia. Four planting times were evaluated and the plantings were done in the months of November, December and January, 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 crops, with intervals of 15 days between each planting. The observed valves were submitted to analysis of variance and the averages compared by Tukey’s test at 5% probability. Weekly samples about 5 principal pests of cotton were collected, examining the attach site of each species and spraying in order to maintain the infestation under the control levels. Through the results achieved, the following conclusions can be inferred: a) the planting time has a great influence in the production of the cotton; b) the cotton sowed at different times results in an increase in the population of insects and a significant decrease in the production.
