OCCURRENCE OF ANTIBODIES TO ROTAVIRUS IN CATTLE IN SÃO PAULO STATE

ABSTRACT

Rotavirus is a worldwide occurring viral agent of neonatal diarrheas of children and the young of many species, mainly calves and piglets. This survey aimed to evaluate the occurrence of antirotavirus antibodies in cattle raised in São Paulo State by the counterimmunoelectroosmophoresis (CIEOP) test. Two hundred serum samples were collected from 23 farms in 19 counties. The total positivity found was 77.5% and the mean farm-level positivity was 76.57 ± 21.73%. Since there are no regular anti-rotavirus vaccines currently available in Brazil, these results show a high occurrence of rotavirus natural infections in São Paulo State.
