BEAN ANTHRACNOSE: SEED TREATEMENT AND CORRELATION BETWEEN DISEASE INCIDENCE IN PLANTS AND SEED INFECTION

ABSTRACT

This research work was done in order to evaluate the effect of fungicides against Colletotrichum lindemuthianum in bean seeds and verify the correlation between anthracnose field incidence and seed infection level by this pathogen. Seeds of cv Carioca showing 7.5% infection, were treated, by using six fungicides. Seed borne fungi incidence was determinated in laboratory on blotter test and emergence, seedling symptoms in greenhouse conditions; yield was also evaluated in field trials, in two localities. According to the laboratory tests all fungicides were effective against C. lindemuthianum. In greenhouse the emergence was not significantly increased, however, the fungicides carbendazim + thiram e iprodione+thiram, iprodione + carbendazim e thiram reduced significantly cotyledon injuries. Under field conditions emergence and yield were not significantly increased by seed treatment. There was no significant correlation between the percentage of plants with anthracnose symptoms in the field and the percentage on seed infection with C. lindemuthianum. The percentage of plants with anthracnose symptoms were 32.75 to 48.75 in Sorocaba and 17.00 to 33.50% in Paulinia, while the seed infection levels on these localities were zero to 1.00%, and zero to 5.50%, respectively.
