FIRST EPIDEMIC OCCURRENCE OF LECANICILLIUM (= VERTICILLIUM) LECANII (ZIMM.) VIÈGAS (CLASSE-FORMA: HYPHOMYCETES) ON PINE APHID CINARA ATLANTICA (HEMIPTERA: APHIDIDAE) IN SÃO PAULO STATE, BRAZIL

ABSTRACT

Cinara atlantica is responsible for severe damage in Pinus plantations in Brazil. It was observed infesting P. taeda plants, with high level of mortality of these insects in Nova Campina, SP, region, from July to December 2001. The dead aphids showed infection characteristic of fungi on their bodies. This fungus was isolated in BDA media culture and after microscopics observations it was identified as Lecanicillium (= Verticillium) lecanii.
