Abstract
This essay aims to identify some politico-philosophical elements present in the History of the Conquest (1599) written by Cristóbal del Castillo. To this purpose we will focus, on the one hand, on his narration of the Noche Triste (The Night of Sorrows) and, on the other, on his references to one of the Mesoamerican calendars, the tonalpohualli. We will put forward some considerations around Cristóbal del Castillo’s ideas, highlighting the politico-philosophical content present in the chronicler’s personal letters, in order to reconsider the significance of his story-telling and the place this little-known work occupies in the cultural world of New Spain.
