La Quintrala: a reading perspective of the colonial

Abstract

In this work we analyze the historical figure of the colonial period Catalina de los Rios y Lisperguer, La Quintrala -as portrayed in the historical essay Los Lisperguer y La Quintrala, written in the 19^th century by Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna- in order to examine the forms of reading the colonial period that are reflected in the writings of this Chilean intellectual. By way of illustration, we draw a brief comparison between Mackenna's paradigm for La Quintrala and two other readings of this character written in the 20^th century. In this process we observe details of the reworking of colonial history that put into perspective new possibilities of colonial studies / readings.
