Latin american practices of translingualism: from Xul Solar to the poetics of portuñol-portunhol

Abstract

This essay deals with the multifaceted production of the artist Oscar Agustín Alejandro Shultz Solari (1897-1963) - better known as Xul Solar - by recognizing his concern for building a Latin American identity, in the first half of the 20th century, and his intentional development of an artistic practice that mixes verbal and pictorial languages around the correlation and contradictions between languages and arts. From the start, therefore, this study signals a place of conflict, and takes the non-accommodation of differences as the mark of a singular discourse within the aesthetic order, which, by convention, I call modernist. As an extension, this proposal drifts into the contemporary scene, to examine some productions in Portuñol-Portunhol, exemplified by the work of the writer Wilson Bueno (1949-2010).
