For a reading of the poems “À Inglaterra” and “Marcha do ódio” by Guerra Junqueiro

Abstract

The poems “À Inglaterra” (“To England”) and “Marcha do Ódio” (“The March of Hate”) stand out among Guerra Junqueiro’s works (1850-1923) as key compositions, which were also catalysts of the reactions to the British Ultimatum of 1890. In this article the author demonstrates the communicative and argumentative capacities of these poems, and contributes to a new appreciation of Junqueiro’s satire, and even of satire in general. The article deepens our understanding of a poet who was one of the greatest figures of Portugal in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and of the first two decades of the twentieth century.

Keywords:
