Autofiction and the Contemporary Novel

Abstract

This article’s starting point is the idea that today’s world is characterized by the exposure of private life, which entails changes in the figurations of the novel. Thus, there is an intersection between autofiction and the contemporary novel, in which the latter appropriates elements of self-writing to give the impression that it is based on real facts. After establishing an archaeology of autofiction in France, where the term was coined, this article presents some ethical problems that arise when authors decide to reveal themselves in public, dragging relative and friends along with them.
