The Constituent Assembly of 1823: Ideology and Historiography

Abstract:

The bicentennial celebration of Brazilian constitutionalism encourages reflection on the relationship between professional history and collective memory, highlighting how the latter is often shaped by ideologies. Historiography helps identify these ideological views and can contribute to a more balanced analysis of historical events. This article examines the Constituent of 1823 as a case study. During its operation, three ideological currents emerged that distinctly explained the events of the time and later crystallized into partisan historiographies-conservative, liberal, and radical-whose echoes are still heard today. The study of historiography reveals how ideologies and partisan traditions persist over time, transforming history into a field of political dispute where different perspectives compete to validate their interpretations of events.
