Church and State in Nineteenth-century Brazil: a Dialogue with Luis Javier Ortiz Mesa's La Iglesia católica y la formación del Estado-nación en América Latina en el siglo XIX. El caso colombiano

Abstract

The article intends to compare the relationship between State and Church in Brasil and Colombia during the nineteenth century. In both nations there are some similarities - as the diffusion of liberal and anticlerical ideas and the permanence of patronage over the Church -, but we can also identify strikingly differences. The most important perhaps in degree of radicalism and the political partisanship present in the disputes between the liberal and Ultra Catholic Colombians.
