Abstract:
A controversial topic in recent years, the transposition of the São Francisco River is not at all a new project. In this article, I investigate the propositions of canals for the São Francisco in the Nineteenth-Century. Based on sources such as engineering studies and parliamentary annals, I analyze how the discussions on this project were related to topics such as transport and droughts, taking place amid arduous disputes at that period.
