REPUBLICANISM OR REPUBLICANISMS? IDEAS OF REPUBLIC IN THE PROVINCE OF ESPÍRITO SANTO (1887-1889)

Abstract

This paper discusses the republican experience in the Espírito Santo province during the last years of the Brazilian Empire. The analysis of political rhetoric in the local press shows a strong support to the republican movement in the southern part of the province since the foundation of the first Republican Club there in 1887. Thus, we look into the republican project developed by this group in that region and who were the people behind such organization. Besides that, we single out the main political ideas and arguments composing the southern republican discourse. In this regard, an inquiry is conducted as well on how republicanism shaped the province’s dynamics and its respective political practices. Through the meanings then conferred on the idea of republic in the Espírito Santo province, the pluralist bent of the Brazilian republican movement is eventually brought to the fore.
