A Centennial Heritage in Brasilia: Heritage processes and discourses concerning the background of the New Capital

ABSTRACT

This paper bases on documental analysis of heritage-processes - dossiers - related to buildings that predate the inauguration of Brasília and are located in the Nation's Federal District territory. The buildings are the Historical Museum of Planaltina, the São Sebastião Church of Planaltina, the Foundation Stone of Planaltina and the Gama Farm House, which, due to their architecture and origins, contrast with the modern monumentality of the Pilot Plan of Brasilia. The method consisted of collecting data from the dossiers and analyzing the justifications for the selections expressed in that documentation, which allowed us to analyze how a so-called predecessor tradition was incorporated into heritage discourse related to Brasilia. Our conclusions point out to how this ancient heritage is valued in the dossiers, especially for its role in the process of establishing the new capital, as par an effort to reinforce the monumental image of Brasilia.
