OBJECTIVES: To verify the event of pregancy, and to describe women's planning and desire of having a child. METHODS: This study used a descriptive, exploratory qualitative design. The sample consisted of 12 women from a well respect prenatal service who had a high risk pregnancy. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: The main central themes have emerged: Desired but not planned pregnancy and associated to either to non-use or incorrect use of contraceptive methods; Desired but not planned pregnancy associated with religious beliefs; Desired planned pregnancy; and, Not desired nor planned pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: Prior to identification of the main central ideas, it was observed the need of health education, specifically related to the reproductive health.
