The Future of Nursing: Envisioning the Profession in 2050

Currently, nurses are practicing an autonomous and scientific discipline in the USA. Its practice has a holistic scope and have gained recognition by the society. Many researchers have studied the future of nursing, speculating how nurses will care for the population in 2050. They are optimistic about the future of the profession. There was an increase in the number of nursing theories in the last decade and it appears that they will continue to be produced. The discipline will further mature. The profession will continue to accumulate strength and responsibility in the field of healthcare, and nurses with advanced practice will continue to expand their scope of action.

By 2050, 150 million environmental refugees are expected to arise due to global warming. Strengthening the commitment of nurses with nursing knowledge is important for them to better address the global changes and their implications for public health. Nurses will need to develop a universal ethos care, which is compatible with all cultures. Love and empathy will always be the basic idea of care, and technology will continue to facilitate the nursing care. It is likely that humans will have biological microchip implants to monitor their health. Nurse robots are also likely to reduce human suffering by decreasing assistance waiting time. New drugs are expected to help nurses treat sick people, increasing their life expectancy. Interactive video communication will continue to be used to monitor basic health without the need of transportation. However, technology will never replace nurses, although it can help them.

Nurses should focus on caring nursing as opposed to nursing care. Training in spiritual empathy will have priority in nursing schools because nursing will always be relationship-based activity, full of dialogue and compassion. Nurses will play an essential role as ethical consultants since they will always be the real patients' advocates. Nurses will be invited to share their knowledge due to their unique view on the human care. It is essential that nurses continue to embrace the endless potential of nursing, thus contributing to the health care system and providing/bringing more hope and love to the humankind.
